Postdoctoral post

From IFPA wiki

The IFPA group at the University of Liège in Belgium is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join our efforts in gravitational-wave data analysis. He or she will work primarily with Prof. Maxime Fays and Prof. Jean-René Cudell towards the development of data analysis techniques for one or both of the following: (i) burst detections; (ii) gravitationally lensed GWs from compact binaries.

The exact research projects are open to discussion based on the applicant’s background and interests. The focus should be on short- and mid-term activities using data from the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detectors. Previous experience in practical GW data analysis is preferable, though candidates from related research areas with a strong background in scientific computing and machine learning are also highly welcome to apply.

The starting day for the contract can be negotiated but ideally would be between October 2023 and January 2024. The initial appointment will be for 2 years, with a possible one-year extension subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability. The starting net salary will be 2900 € and the position includes health insurance and social security.

The IFPA research group at ULiège is part of the Virgo Collaboration and the Einstein Telescope collaboration. The group also includes two senior astrophysicists (Damien Hutsemekers and Dominique Sluse) who specialise in AGNs and electromagnetic lensing, and currently 2 postdocs, 2 PhD students, and 3 master students. The group keeps close contact with the 8 Belgian groups involved in gravitational wave research, and with the mechatronics group developing the E-Test prototype. The usual language of scientific work in the group is English. Computing can be carried out using in-house high-performance computers, and external resources such as the LIGO data grid. For further details, see http://www.theo.phys.ulg.ac.be.

Applications should be submitted by 2023-07-15 for full consideration, but may still be considered until the position is filled. Check the above website to see if the position has been filled. Candidates should hold a PhD at the start of the appointment.

To apply, please send the following documents to jr.cudell@uliege.be and maxime.fays@uliege.be:

  1. a cover letter,
  2. a research statement,
  3. a detailed CV,
  4. a publication list indicating your contribution in the case of collaboration papers,
  5. either a PhD certificate or an official letter indicating the expected defence date,
  6. a copy of your Master’s degree,
  7. a transcript of your Master’s marks.

The candidates should also arrange to have two letters of recommendation sent to the above addresses.

For questions on the scientific scope of the position or the application procedure, please contact Maxime Fays or Jean-René Cudell.
